The Destination Thailand Visa, commonly known as the DTV, was introduced in July 2024 to provide eligible foreign nationals with greater flexibility to spend extended periods in Thailand.
Unlike an ordinary tourist visa, the DTV is valid for five years and permits multiple entries. It is particularly suitable for individuals working remotely for overseas businesses, self-employed professionals and those participating in approved activities in Thailand.
DTV holders are generally permitted to stay for up to 180 days on each entry and may apply for one extension of up to an additional 180 days through the Thai Immigration Bureau.
The DTV is not permanent residence and does not provide unrestricted employment rights in Thailand. Higher-income professionals planning a longer stay may also compare the LTR Visa.

Digital nomads, remote workers and freelancers
The Workcation category is designed for individuals whose professional activities can be performed remotely. Eligible applicants may include:
Applicants must demonstrate genuine professional activity through suitable supporting documents, such as employment contracts, remote working confirmation letters, business registration certificates, client agreements, invoices or professional portfolios.
Self-employed applicants do not necessarily need a traditional employment contract. However, they must provide credible evidence of their business or freelance activities.
The DTV does not authorise employment by Thai companies or freelance services for Thai clients that require Thai work authorisation.

Applicants must provide credible confirmation of their participation, such as an acceptance letter from an eligible organisation or an appointment confirmation from a medical institution.
Course duration, provider accreditation and documentary requirements may vary between Thai embassies and consulates. Not every recreational activity or short course automatically qualifies; the proposed activity and supporting documentation must satisfy the responsible Thai mission.

A passport-style photograph taken within the preceding six months.
Evidence of residence or immigration status accepted by the mission handling the application. Following changes introduced on 31 August 2026, proof of permanent residence and the mission's interpretation of this requirement must be checked carefully.
Bank statements or other accepted financial documents demonstrating funds of at least 500,000 THB or the equivalent in another currency.
A police clearance certificate meeting the responsible embassy's requirements, including its rules on issuing authority, validity and authentication.
Professional documents, activity enrolment confirmations or evidence of the relationship to a DTV holder, depending on the category.
Additional documents, certified translations, legalisation or an interview may be required.
Evidence of financial capacity, not a payment to the Thai government.

Minimum funds, or the equivalent in another currency
Applicants are generally expected to demonstrate access to at least 500,000 THB, or an equivalent amount in another currency. This is not a visa fee; it is evidence of financial capacity.
The way this requirement is assessed can vary. Some Thai missions require three months of bank statements, while others may request six months. Certain missions also examine the continuity of funds, account ownership and the source of substantial deposits.

Standard government visa-fee framework
The actual consular fee is set and collected by the relevant Thai embassy or consulate in its own currency and may differ from a direct conversion. For example, the Royal Thai Embassy in London currently lists a DTV fee of GBP 300. Government visa fees are generally non-refundable, including when an application is refused.

Typical processing at some missions
Processing times vary between Thai embassies and consulates; some take a month or longer. Applications requiring additional financial verification, background checks, supplementary documents or an interview may take longer. We recommend starting well before your intended travel date.
Voyage+ consultancy fees are separate from official visa fees; our quotation depends on the application category, documentation requirements and scope of assistance. The 500,000 THB financial requirement is not a visa application fee.

The minimum financial threshold is generally 500,000 THB or its equivalent. However, the required period of bank statements varies by embassy or consulate. Some require three months, while others request six months. You should not assume that a single statement showing the required balance will be sufficient.

Suitable alternative evidence can include company registration documents, client agreements, invoices and professional portfolios. The documents must demonstrate genuine, eligible professional activity.
A DTV normally permits a stay of up to 180 days per entry. You may apply to the Thai Immigration Bureau for one extension of up to another 180 days for that entry. This can allow a stay of up to approximately 360 days, provided the extension is approved. It is not an automatic one-year permission to stay.
The Workcation category is intended for qualifying remote work connected to overseas employers, businesses or clients. It does not provide a general Thai work permit or authorise employment by Thai companies or services for Thai clients requiring local work authorisation.
Yes. Legally recognised spouses and eligible dependent children under 20 years old may apply under the family category. Separate applications and supporting documents are required.
Yes. Updated DTV documentation requirements introduced on 31 August 2026 include criminal record clearance. The accepted issuing authority, certificate validity and any translation or authentication requirements must be checked with the relevant Thai mission.
Official fees depend on the embassy or consulate processing the application. The general Thai visa-fee framework is 10,000 THB, but missions charge their published fees in local currencies. Professional consultancy fees, where applicable, are charged separately.
The DTV itself is valid for five years and permits multiple entries. An extension of the authorised stay may be requested through the Thai Immigration Bureau, subject to its rules and approval. Extending an individual stay is different from extending the five-year validity of the visa itself.
Holding a DTV does not automatically determine your tax residence. However, the length of time you spend in Thailand, your income and applicable tax regulations may create Thai tax obligations. Independent tax advice is recommended when relevant.
