The Destination Thailand Visa (DTV) is a five-year, multiple-entry visa created for remote professionals, digital nomads, freelancers, participants in selected activities in Thailand, and eligible family members.
With the possibility of staying in Thailand for up to 180 days per entry, the DTV offers a flexible solution for people who want to spend more time in Thailand without relying on short-term tourist visas.

What Is the Destination Thailand Visa?
The Destination Thailand Visa, commonly known as the DTV, is designed for foreign nationals who want to stay in Thailand for extended periods while working remotely or participating in eligible activities.
The visa is valid for five years and allows multiple entries into Thailand. On each entry, the visa holder may generally be permitted to stay for up to 180 days.
A DTV holder may also apply for one extension of up to an additional 180 days for that entry. Extension applications are reviewed separately by the Thai Immigration Bureau and are not approved automatically.
The DTV provides flexibility, but it does not grant permanent residence or an unrestricted right to work in Thailand.

Who Can Apply for the DTV?
There are three main DTV application categories.
1. Remote Workers, Digital Nomads and Freelancers
The Workcation category is intended for individuals who can perform their professional activities remotely.
This category may be suitable for:
Remote employees
Digital nomads
Freelancers
Consultants
Online business owners
Foreign professionals and talents
Individuals working with international clients
Professionals employed by companies outside Thailand
Applicants must provide credible evidence of their professional activity. Depending on the applicant’s circumstances, this may include an employment contract, employer letter, company registration documents, client agreements, invoices, professional profiles or a portfolio.
The supporting documents should clearly explain:
What the applicant does
Who the applicant works for
How the applicant earns an income
Whether the work can be performed remotely
Whether the professional activity is genuine and continuing
The DTV should not be treated as a general Thai work permit. Individuals planning to work for a Thai employer, provide services within the Thai labour market or carry out regulated business activities in Thailand may need a different visa and separate work authorisation.
2. Participants in Eligible Activities
Applicants may also qualify by participating in certain cultural, educational, sporting, wellness or medical activities in Thailand.

Applicants must normally provide confirmation from a legitimate organisation or service provider in Thailand.
The confirmation should clearly state:
The applicant’s full name
The name of the activity
The location of the activity
The programme’s start and end dates
The duration and schedule of the programme
The name and contact details of the provider
Payment or enrolment information, where applicable
A basic booking confirmation may not always be sufficient. The documents should demonstrate a genuine and credible reason for the applicant’s extended stay in Thailand.
3. Spouses and Dependent Children
The spouse and dependent children under 20 years old of a DTV holder may also apply for a DTV.
Supporting documents may include:
Marriage certificate
Birth certificate
Adoption certificate
Copy of the principal applicant’s passport
Copy of the principal applicant’s DTV
Evidence of the family relationship
Financial support documents
Certified translations, where required
Legalisation or authentication documents, where required
Each family member normally submits a separate visa application and must satisfy the requirements applicable to their case.
Requirements for translations, legalisation and financial evidence may vary depending on the responsible embassy or consulate.
After Your DTV Is Approved
DTV holders should carefully monitor their immigration status during every stay in Thailand.
Important points include:
The period of stay granted upon arrival
The visa’s expiry date
Passport validity
Extension deadlines
Address-reporting obligations
Immigration reporting requirements
Re-entry dates
Tax-residence considerations
Employment and business restrictions
The five-year visa validity does not mean that the holder may remain continuously in Thailand for five years.
Each entry creates a separate authorised period of stay. Always check the date granted by the immigration officer and do not rely only on the general 180-day rule.
Extending Your Stay in Thailand
A DTV holder may apply for one extension of up to 180 additional days for an individual entry.
The application is submitted to the Thai Immigration Bureau while the applicant is in Thailand.
Applicants may be asked to provide:
Passport
Current DTV
Entry stamp or arrival record
Completed immigration forms
Recent photograph
Proof of address in Thailand
Financial evidence
Evidence that the original purpose of stay continues
Employment or activity documents
Applicable extension fee
Additional documents requested by the immigration officer
An extension is not automatic. The Immigration Bureau reviews each application individually and may grant a shorter period or request additional documents.
Applications should be prepared before the existing authorised stay expires.
Working in Thailand with a DTV
The DTV is primarily intended for remote professional activity connected to an overseas employer, overseas clients or a foreign business.
It should not be assumed to provide unrestricted permission to work in Thailand.
Activities that may require a different visa or separate work authorisation include:
Employment by a Thai company
Receiving a salary from a Thai employer
Providing services directly within the Thai labour market
Performing regulated professional activities
Operating a local business
Working at a physical workplace in Thailand
Carrying out activities beyond the purpose declared in the DTV application
Applicants should obtain appropriate advice before entering into Thai employment, opening a local business or changing the nature of their professional activity.
Tax Considerations
A DTV is an immigration document. It does not automatically determine the holder’s tax obligations.
Spending a significant amount of time in Thailand may create tax-residence or reporting considerations.
The individual’s position may depend on:
The number of days spent in Thailand
The source of the individual’s income
When and how income is transferred to Thailand
The applicant’s country of tax residence
Any applicable double-taxation agreement
The nature of the applicant’s employment or business
Changes to applicable Thai tax regulations
Applicants with complex income, employment or business structures should obtain individual tax advice.
Common Reasons for Delays or Additional Questions
A DTV application may be delayed where:
The financial balance does not meet the requirement
The required balance has not been maintained
Large deposits are not explained
Bank statements are incomplete or unclear
The employment documents do not confirm remote work
Freelance activity is not supported by sufficient evidence
The professional portfolio is too limited

Names, dates or addresses are inconsistent
